The notion of living with roommates can seem more daunting than it really is. Even if you and your roommate aren’t the best of friends, that isn’t so bad. It’s just about having mutual respect and an understanding of what each roommate wants. If you live at The Colony’s apartments with a roommate, be sure to always be courteous and basically treat them the way you would like to be treated. If you need more tips on how to survive living with roommates, follow the tips below:
1. Talk to one another effectively- Notice that we used the word “effectively”. You should communicate in a way that is kind but assertive, rather than aggressive or passive-aggressive. You should state your personal expectations from the very beginning, in order of what’s most important to you, so they understand your dealbreakers. That way, if they violate one of your “rules”, at least you have a conversation you already agreed to previously.
2. Keep your friendship limited- Even if both of you (or one of you) is new to the city, it’s really a double-edged sword becoming too close to your roommate. If your friendship doesn’t end up working out, then your living situation becomes jeopardized. It’s much better to just be kind but to keep a polite distance. If a friendship does occur, it should happen over time, in a way that’s organic and not forced.
3. Voice your concerns- If your roommate is constantly bringing over random strangers that he/she meets on dating apps, plays music too loud, showers unreasonably early, or something like this, then talk to your roommate. If you want to be less confrontational, it might be best to send a text first.
